imagination

noun  imag·i·na·tion  \ i-ˌma-jə-ˈnā-shən \
resourcefulness in dealing with new or unusual experiences
In my dream the angel shrugged and said, if we fail this time it will be a failure of imagination and then she placed the world gently in the palm of my hand.
—Brian Andres

Letter from the Director

I was diagnosed as dyslexic at the age of 15. In the sixties, it was thought that only males could have dyslexia. This presented yet another delay to an already unknown learning difference. Throughout my life, yes, I did feel atypical in so many ways. I was smart and a natural learner, just not in the inflexible structure of traditional formal education. Well past my elementary years of school, I still was unable to tell the difference between the amount of money each coin represented, or tell time, or know the phonemes of basic letters.  Madness is how I would define my formative education. I was an anomaly to pretty much anyone who knew me, including my own understanding of my talents and disabilities.
Picture
I found it close to impossible to predict my own performance in any given task. I worked hard at everything, but I worked especially hard to become invisible—hoping, praying I would not again be publicly humiliated by reading out loud, or struggling with a math game, or messing up the order of a multisyllabic word as I spoke.

To this day I remember my appointment at Riley Hospitals Neurology Department in laser-sharp detail. The explanation of my big, fast, great (yet atypical) brain was a breathtaking relief. I graduated from high school at the age of seventeen. How? I don’t exactly know, except I was a terrific listener and had become an expert at compensatory adaptations. That same summer I was tutored by one of the very first Orton Gillingham tutors in the Indianapolis area. Since that time, I have continued a lifetime of learning.  I cleaned houses to finance and complete my bachelor’s degree. I then started a master’s degree in both Counseling Psychology and School Psychology. I trained in Orton Gillingham Basic and Advanced Language. Fast-forward, and I was one of the very first practitioners in the state who was trained in all the Lindamood-Bell programs by Phyllis Lindamood in their San Luis Obispo, California clinic.

I started tutoring out of my family’s laundry room as a hopeless optimist and with $125.00 in stamps for advertising, I established Lindner Learning Center, Inc. We have been in business for almost 30 years. I am honored to work with 25 of the very best teachers in the country, who, I might add, I love dearly. My daughter Erin is my Assistant Director and we have worked together to build this wonderful company, and a wonderful family on our own terms, in our own way.  What could be better than this?

Without a grain of ego, I know that there are things that I do better than most anyone else. I know I can empathize with others and motivate people. I am able to trust authenticity in myself. I understand working hard and making mistakes is a key part of my learning process. I am grateful for my high energy level and for my intuitive perceptions. I want my life story to comfort and inspire those of you who struggle as I have. I know how exhausting and unfair it feels to work harder than others and not see the results. . . yet!  What you can’t see, at least right now, is not the end of the story.  Academic success is wonderful, but more important still is common sense, personal and professional ethics, and the ability to embrace all people and see them as “perfect.” These are a few of the incredible lessons you are gathering as you move through this journey.  I am speaking for myself and for my entire staff when I say that we are living our dream of changing the world for the better one student at a time.  We are survivors and it is my mission and the shared mission of those at Lindner Learning Center to partner with you and help you find your stairway to the stars.

Letter from Maggie

My name is Maggie Lindner. I am an English Goldendoodle and I was born in Southern Alabama, only a 20 minute drive to the Gulf of Mexico. I was specifically bred to be the most gentle of creatures and because this is my authentic nature, I come into the center several times each week to see our Lindner students. I reside in my mom's office and every hour either Lindner students or parents come in for a quick visit. They seem to feel happy to see me and speak to me in a calm way while they have a brief cuddle. This is my job and I do think I make a difference for some or our anxious children. Together, we catch a breath and feel calmer and reassured.

Letter from Assistant Center Director

I found myself at a crossroads in the summer of 1998: Pursue the traditional classroom teaching path, or focus on investing and growing our tutorial center-something I loved more and more each day. One option offered a clear, linear roadmap. The other required a leap of faith, and embarking on an exciting and winding journey. Looking back twenty years later, I am thankful every day for that choice.

In the early years, Karen and I would drive all over the city, from Greenfield to Noblesville and back again to the International school, working with one student

at a time to develop our practice. We hungered (and continue to hunger) for the best methodology that could affect efficient learning and, ultimately, improve the quality of life for struggling students. We began to define, and then refine, our intention: to provide stellar learning intervention through empathetic, accountable, relational presentation. We became acquaintances, then collaborators, and then often friends with the leading psychologists, psychiatrists, school administrators and physicians in the city.
Business IS personal—and with each student, each parent, and each co-teacher, it becomes more and more so. I have the honor of learning from and working alongside my mother, Karen. Our strengths complement one another as we continue to invest our time and talents and hearts in the success of Lindner Learning Center. Too, it is a privilege to work in collaboration with our fantastically talented (and kind, and accountable and mission-based) teaching team. Many teachers have been with us since “the early days.” Our department heads, trainers, master teachers and administrative staff provide both accountability and mentorship for teachers welcomed to our center. Our “family business” has 20+ members!

We are problem-solvers at Lindner Learning Center. With partnerships between specialists as well as within our own staff, we develop a remedial or academic strategy customized for each student entering our doors. Thank you for considering Lindner Learning Center as you explore learning support options!

Letter from Academy Director

After graduating from Indiana University’s School of Education with a degree in Secondary Mathematics and teaching for over twenty years, I have realized that confidence and having a positive self-esteem are key components for children to learn. It is our mission at Lindner Academy to work as a team of educators to ensure that each child that enters our school program has a second chance at educational success. We listen to each child’s story and understand that each student has different goals and aspirations. We problem-solve and communicate with families and develop a custom educational plan for each of our students.
Picture
We understand that each and every child has a unique style of learning and as teachers we personalize instruction to fit a student’s strengths and unique learning styles with our teaching methodologies so students have the best chance at success. The end result is a child who feels confident about learning and knows what success feels like. Our school program is a safe and fun learning environment for students to reach their full potential. Our students don’t have ID numbers but names, and we take great pride in changing their lives!

inspire

verb  in·spire  \ in-ˈspī(-ə)r \
fill (someone) with the urge or ability to do or feel something, especially to do something creative
The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.

Lindner Educators

Our teachers know they are a member of the most elite, problem solving teaching team in the country. Each day they hold themselves to their own teaching mission and offer themselves in radical generosity to change this world one student at a time.

In addition to Lindner’s in-house training, each of our teachers has a teaching or related degree with a variety of specialized endorsements and advanced degrees.

For the opportunity to teach in the Lindner Academy (school), each teacher is required to maintain a minimal weekly schedule in the tutoring side of Lindner. This allows our school students the unique opportunity to not only move through academic subjects with a skilled academic teacher, but also ensures that same teacher is fully qualified to remediate learning issues and “fill in the gaps” of missed concepts.

This dual presentation by the BEST TEACHING STAFF IN THE COUNTRY is a recipe for restoration of knowledge, self-worth and a student’s basic skill base.

We work as a team and consider ourselves part of a working family. The average length of employment at LLC is between nine to ten years, and some of our teachers have been with us since 1991. Given the level of specialization, strong communication is essential on our list of priorities. We value candor and authenticity. We are accountable for the minutes of each of our students' educational lives at LLC.
